The Dallas Stars AAA Mites competed in their second tournament of the 2008/2009 season by traveling to Oklahoma for the Oklahoma City "Oktoberfest 2008 Squirt Hockey Tournament" on October 4th & 5th. Other teams that were present for the tournament, were the Oklahoma City Blazers, the Kansas City Saints, the Wichita Warriors, the Grapevine Wolves and the Tulsa Flames.
The Stars faced the Grapevine Wolves Squirts for the first game, which was a rematch of the 2008 Texas Shootout Championship Game. The Stars started off pretty slow in the first period that ended at a 1-1 tie. After a little motivation during the 1st intermission by head coach, Jordan French, the Stars came out strong in the 2nd and 3rd periods to earn a hard fought 4-2 win over Grapevine.
For the second game of the tournament, the Stars were matched against the Oklahoma City Blazers Squirts. The Blazers came out strong to defend their pride of playing on their “own home ice.” After having two obvious goals (that were clearly in the net) disallowed by the “Blue Line Referee”, the Stars found themselves behind 3-2 towards the end of the 3rd period. The Stars put up a great fight but OKC ended up putting the game away with an empty net goal with 3 seconds left.
The Stars third game of the tournament was against the Wichita Warriors Squirts from Kansas. It looked as if the Stars would have a difficult time against the “big kids” on the Wichita roster. Especially when there was a height difference of about “one foot” during the face offs. It was clear from the beginning of the game that the younger Stars weren’t going to let size get in the way. During the game, one of the Wichita parents told me, "these 8 year olds fom Dallas aren't afraid or intimidated of our big boys." The Stars played an excellent game and had numerous players contribute for 6 goals to put away the Warriors 6-4.
Two hours after facing Wichita in game three, the Stars ended up facing the Warriors once again, based off of the standings. Wichita came out of the locker room and looked extremely tired from the previous game against the Stars. The excellent physical conditioning of the young Stars shined during this game and the boys worked extremely hard with a lot of passing and backchecking during all three periods. The Dallas Mites put on a show and once again, numerous players contributed to score an amazing 9 goals against the Squirts from Wichita. The final score was 9-0. Stars Goalie, Marcus Alfaro was awarded the Game MVP for his stellar “shutout” performance between the pipes.
The Kansas City Saints won the tournament and finished 4-0, the Dallas Stars finished 3-1, Oklahoma City Blazers finished 2-2, the Grapevine Wolves also finished 2-2, the Wichita Wolves finished 1-3 and the Tulsa Flames finished 0-4.
The Dallas Stars AAA Mites are now an amazing 7-1-1 in their two Squirt Level Tournaments this 2008/2009 season.
